Pride Month is celebrated every June, and on the 28th is Pride Day. Pride has existed since the 1969 Stonewall protests, which marked a pivotal moment in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. This month celebrates all groups and labels under the LGBTQ+ umbrella, as well as embracing your authentic self.
Kira Bailey is the 2021 Girl of the Year, and her great-aunts, Mamie Bailey and Lynette, are lesbians. She’s 10 years old, lives in Michigan, and loves all animals. It’s important that they included an LGBTQ+ relationship in her story to show that it’s okay to be yourself, and it’s important to accept others who may be different from you.
One of YSC’s trainees, as well as many of her friends, is part of the community. She states, “I always feel supported by them. Having support from your community is important because it gives you confidence and makes you feel good about being who you are.”
Another trainee is also part of the LGBTQ+ community and emphasizes the importance of feeling supported by her friends. She claims, “I was nervous to come out, but now that I have, I feel comfortable. It has made my life easier because I can be myself.”
Both trainees preach acceptance, claiming that there would be less judgment and conflict if everyone were accepted for who they are. Girl AGain and Yes She Can are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment for all.
